Winter Study Tour

Hi everyone,

This is a really early question regarding what y’all think about the Winter break Study Tour. Walking past the MBA Electives bulletin board today, I noticed the posting about the China Study Tour. I think that one reason why the program has decided to revisit Beijing and Shanghai is because the MBA program has previously experienced educational and networking successes in China. I forgot what companies the class will be visiting, but I think one is usually Google. And also from what I have seen on the website, our program has experienced India, Japan, Korea, and South America. Additionally on April 2nd at the MBA program meet and greet, I was chatting with our classmate Ken Christopher and he stated a desire to inquire about a Study Tour to South Africa.

My main question is what is everyone’s perspective on traveling and learning abroad (for leisure and for business)?

Since each person has their own uniquely positive perspective, what Study Tour country would you want to travel to?

Also, is one of your desired MBA Study Tours going to occur within the upcoming year (Winter and/or next Summer)? If not, how feasible would it be to initiate your new Study Tour plan?

I am wondering these questions because during today’s break some of us started to lightly discuss this topic. I am also personally interested in everyone’s adventures, views, and ideas regarding travel because I love experiencing new foreign countries, cultures, and inspiration. I probably will participate during winter break, but it’s a matter of scrounging around and finding some funds.

Anyway, here are a few pieces of information that I can recall:
Dates of 12/12/2008 – 12/23/2008, 1 class and 4 units.

Thanks for reading my thoughts concerning this future class. It has been a great first 2 weeks thus far, and I believe our cohort will develop some great personal and team growth when our summer intensive courses come to close. I shall talk to everyone later.

Hi All,

I think the trip is in January, not December. Anyway, I am extremely interested in the winter study tour. And if any of you from our class are thinking about going, I think it would be a great time for us to get back together and share what we have learned through our elective classes. It would be like a reunion! :)

I really want to go to China. I have only been there one time and it was a very short trip. I am interested in learning how they do business there. My second choice would be South America if they are offering it this year. I've heard a lot of great things about Argentina, Chile, Peru... And great wines too, which I'd love to try.

I am definitely all for leisure travel. If I didn't tell you already, I love to travel and take vacations. I love seeing the world through other peoples' eyes and cultures. I haven't been everywhere, but it is a goal of mine to get to as many places as I can, while I'm still young. If you haven't had a chance to go anywhere, I highly suggest you do.

This is a great opportunity to give those of you who haven't traveled very much a chance to go to that country you've always dreamed! Especially if you are willing to research it and plan your own study tour. I think this is an excellent program that USF offers. I hope to gain as much from it as possible.

I'm excited! Woohoo!

Hi All, I agree that studying abroad, learning new experiences from foreign people can be very valuable to our knowledge. The culture in every country is different. They have their own set of standards or rules, written or unwritten, that must be followed in order to succeed.

I had the opportunity to do an internship back in Jakarta, Indonesia for a public accounting firm. I worked as an accountant. What I noticed so differently than that in the US in terms of the office culture is the spirit of competitiveness. I feel like during my working time in the US, my colleagues were really helpful to me, they wanted me to be successful and accomplish great things. However, different story I had in Jakarta where most of them disliked pushing or encouraging one another. They were helpful but only to the point of me not going beyond my responsibility. I realize in order to grow you need a positive, encouraging environment from people surrounding you.

I am intrigued of studying abroad in European countries such as France, Italy. What I concern most though is the communication barrier. How can we learn and listen effectively from the local people? I guess taking french or italian class can be helpful before getting on board. Anyway, This is just a comment. I hope we can share more of our thoughts and get together eventually on a same trip one day.

Cheers!

We should do a car wash to raise money! Since we're all broke.

Hello!

I found this blog to be especially interesting as I have been looking forward to the winter study tour for some time. I am excited about the opportunity to travel abroad and gain some valuable insight into the business dealings of a foreign country.

As I dreamt about where I would like to travel, I also thought to myself, what would I want to learn? If I am going to travel around the world and spend thousands of dollars, I might as well learn something of particular interest with potential economic benefit. I started to throw ideas around in my head and came up with several that I found exciting.

I wasn't sure how the study tours worked or even if I could suggest a specific tour. Then, at one of the MBA information sessions I mentioned my ideas to Prof. Bell and he suggested that I speak to Prof. Barry Doyle, who is our Academic Director for the MBAI program. I had the opportunity to meet with Prof. Doyle and explained to him my excitement for the program and the ideas I had for a study tour. He suggested that I put my ideas and suggestions together as it is definitely possible to initiate a specific tour if there was sufficient interest among students and faculty.

I wanted to go on a trip that dealt with a current issue that is relevant to our environment today, as well as a place that would be a blast to visit. It didn't take long for Japan to pop in my head. How fun would that be to party in Tokyo as well as learn about one of the biggest mortgage and asset bubbles in history. What could we learn from their experience as we are going through a similar, albeit much less severe, bubble here at home?

Anyway, this is an exciting time for us all and I welcome any feedback regarding a Japan trip. I will be posting a poll with several ideas for this tour in the coming days....Stay tuned!

Hi everyone,

Anyone knows how this study tour work? Like, how we can get full credit? How this kind of study tour can be arranged through school system? Can we have our own tour?

The reason I am asking here is that the fare for this study tour is kind of expensive based on my China travel experiences. Well...One of advantage to go with the school is that we will have the interactive session with those most successful companies in China. But...I do agree with Ping and Cory... money does matters!

A small group of people with the same interests will probably save us some cash, and we will be more mobilized and efficient for certain research topic. In fact, I wouldn't think that is too difficult for me to get hold of those big firms in financial industry, largest law firm, Big fours and etc in China. In addition, we can't just go to BJ and SH if we are in China. There are so many large cities with great cultures and companies are ready to discovery.

I'll go back to China for sure this winter, and it's for my both school and personal purpose. So, anyone interested planning by ourself? Or maybe we could just try to plan this tour by ourself first, and see how better we can get then decide whether we should go by ourselves or just join one.

Best,

Jason

Cory,

I would answer your question about the Study Tour with a resounding YES. I don't know if you have had the opportunity to travel, but I highly recommend it. I was lucky enough to work in Germany for two years. During that time I experienced so many things for the first time. It really allowed me to let go of previous notions and develop new ones on my own. I was able to see how people lived from within the culture rather than from outside. I think taking the opportunity to learn about another culture through business perspectives would be an invaluable addition to your resume and life experiences.

Personally, I am drawn to the Asian countries. I do not know a lot about the business cultures there, but taking the rising economies into account, I think it would be a worthwhile experience both professionally ad personally.

I also believe that we are only young for so long. I know that there is a finite number of years that I will have to travel before I "settle in" and start a family of my own. Therefore, I will jump at any opportunity to explore and experience before I am forced to grow up!

Thanks for reading!

Hi everyone,

I will probably take the study tour as i've never been to china before and this is a great opportunity for me to see what's in china.
I guess why USF picked China is because China is doing so well right now in terms of their economic. When I worked at an investment bank in Singapore, almost all their investments are linked to china because China keeps on growing and gives a promising future. With this trip, i hope that we all can learn the chinese culture etc. I'm still waiting if USF will give us other choices besides China.
In addition, of course, we'll have fun!! it's all about travelling and leisure. I'm sure we'll be going to enjoy this study abroad programme. I can't wait for January. Looking forward to it!
